We believe we should regulate children’s viewing of TV-14.

TV-14 means that the show may be unsuitable for children under the age of 14 because they may contain intense violence, intense sexual situations, strong coarse language, and intensely suggestive dialogue.

TV-14 Rating

We believe that all TV-14 rated TV shows should be banned for children under the age of 18, based on the concerning amount of violent and gory content in TV-14 shows, TV-14 may say it’s suitable for ages 14 and up, but it is not. Many TV-14 shows are absolutely not suitable for children or teenagers. Here is a 2017 article about the TV-14 rating, and why TV-14 shows contain so much sex and violence.
Violent media, especially scary violent media, can cause anxiety, stress, impaired attention, social isolation, fear, poor conflict resolution, increased frequency of nightmares, risky behaviors, low self-esteem, influence on behavior, depression, and issues with phycological adjustment, especially in children and adolescents.

While TV-14 shows should be suitable for many adults, many are not safe for children or teenagers.

Teenagers

Hannibal, Scream Queens, and Supernatural have all been rated TV-14 despite them all being very violent and gory shows, we think it is concerning that many shows are rated TV-14 when they shouldn’t be, making parents think they are suitable for impressionable teenagers.

We believe that there should a lawsuit against the TV Parental Guidelines for allowing such inappropriate shows be rated TV-14, or a law banning TV-14 for minors. An ID should also be required to watch TV-14 rated TV shows.

We believe that legislation is a step in the right direction to protect the children from the dangers of TV-14.

It is time that we protect our children by removing access to TV-14. Clearly they won’t do it themselves. And clearly we can’t figure out how to regulate television. So we must regulate our childrens’ viewing of TV-14. For their own good!

Going forward: Only those over 18 should be allowed to watch TV-14.

Someone may say a law may be constitutional, but it is a step in the right direction in my opinion, we are very concerned about TV-14 media and the impact it has on kids. In my opinion, teens should not watch TV-14 shows.

TV-14 meaning

While it may say it is unsuitable for children under the age of 14, I still think exposing impressionable adolescents to violent and gory content is a bad idea.

Netflix recommends TV-14 for teenagers, but never let streaming services raise our children.

TV-14, especially binge-watching TV-14, can have a negative impact on teen’s mental health, including sleep disruption, anreduced physical activity, reduced schoolwork, reduced chores. Teens’ brains are still developing and many simply aren’t mature enough to handle a majority of TV-14 rated TV-14 shows.

We believe age 14 is way too young to watch TV-14 rated content, no one under the age of 18 should be able to watch them at all.

We believe that streaming services should be sued if they continue to allow a child under the age of 18 to watch TV-14 rated content.

Studies have some that a majority of TV-14 contain about as much drug use, drinking, violence, and smoking as a TV-MA show.

TV-14 can also contain sexual content, which can be harmful for children.

Our thoughts on children using social media

We believe that all children under the age of 18 should not use social media, there is plenty of research that social media, especially social media addiction, can have a negative impact on a child’s mental health, including eating disorders, sleep deprivation, reduced physical activity, social isolation.

Social media platforms are also designed to be addictive — they know their products are toxic.

Utah, Iowa, Texas, Ohio, Arkansas, and Florida have all passed legislation to regulate or restrict child’s use of social media, we believe these bills are a step in the right direction to protect our children.

My thoughts on cell phones being allowed in schools

We are also concerned about cell phones being allowed in schools, as it can cause reduced grade levels, reduced social connections, and worse grades. We believe there should be legislation banning all cell phones from all K-12 schools.

We really care about a child’s mental health and their well-being, and certain types of media are really impacting their mental health.

As a parent, I do not allow my 14-year-old son or my 17-year-old daughter to watch TV-14 rated content or use social media — They don’t even have cell phones or personal devices. None of my children will until they are over the age of 18.

Mental health is just as important as physical health, we care about mental health and safety.
